The Elcometer 456 Separate Coating Thickness Gauge is a professional digital gauge designed for fast, accurate and repeatable measurement of dry film thickness (DFT) on metal substrates. Unlike the integral version, the Separate model connects to a wide range of interchangeable external probes, providing greater flexibility for inspecting flat, curved, thin, rough and difficult-to-access surfaces.
Depending on the probe selected, the Elcometer 456 can measure coatings on ferrous, non-ferrous or both ferrous and non-ferrous metal substrates. The extensive probe range also allows coating thicknesses of up to 31 mm (1,220 mils) to be measured, making the system suitable for applications ranging from thin industrial finishes to very thick protective coatings.
Fast and Accurate Coating Thickness Measurements
The Elcometer 456 is designed for efficient inspection, taking more than 70 readings per minute with standard probes and more than 140 readings per minute when using a compatible Scan Probe. This allows inspectors to collect large quantities of dry film thickness data quickly across extensive coated surfaces.
The gauge provides accurate measurements on smooth, rough, thin and curved metal surfaces, with measurement accuracy of up to ±1% when used with the appropriate probe and calibration method.

Choose the Probe for the Substrate and Application
One of the principal advantages of the Separate model is the ability to select a probe specifically suited to the inspection task. Probes are supplied separately and can be interchanged as required.
Ferrous (F) Probes
Ferrous probes use magnetic induction to measure non-magnetic coatings on magnetic metal substrates such as steel and iron. Typical applications include paint, powder coating, epoxy, enamel and other protective coatings applied over steel.
Non-Ferrous (N) Probes
Non-ferrous probes use the eddy current principle to measure non-conductive coatings on non-ferrous metals such as aluminium. They are suitable for many paint, powder coating and industrial finishing applications.
Dual FNF Probes
Dual FNF probes combine ferrous and non-ferrous measurement capability. They are particularly useful when inspectors routinely work with different metal substrates and want the flexibility to measure coatings on both ferrous and non-ferrous surfaces with the same gauge system.

The current Elcometer 456 Separate range is available in Model B, Model S and Model T. Each level provides the same core measurement platform, with additional inspection, statistical, memory and data-management capabilities available as you move through the range.
Model B
Model B provides the essential functions required for fast and accurate coating thickness inspection. It is well suited to users who primarily require immediate on-screen measurements without extensive batch data storage.
Model S
Model S adds enhanced statistical, calibration, memory and data-management functions. USB and Bluetooth® connectivity allow inspection readings to be transferred for analysis and reporting.
Model T
Model T is the most advanced configuration and is designed for inspectors who require extensive data collection and analysis. It can store up to 150,000 readings in 2,500 batches and provides advanced inspection and reporting capabilities for larger projects.
ElcoMaster® Data Management
Compatible Elcometer 456 models can transfer coating thickness measurements to ElcoMaster® Data Management Software using USB or Bluetooth®. Readings can be organized, analysed and incorporated into professional inspection reports, helping reduce the time required to document coating inspection projects.
Bluetooth® connectivity also allows compatible mobile devices to receive inspection data for field reporting and analysis.

QUICK TIP:
How to take a reading with Elcometer 456:
1. Whilst holding the gauge perpendicular, gently place the probe onto the surface.
· Do not drag the probe across the surface or bang the probe down hard onto the surface as this will damage the probe tip resulting in inaccurate readings.
· >1500µm’ (’>60mils’) indicates a reading over the probe range.
2. For subsequent readings, lift the probe off and then replace it onto the coated surface.
· Do not allow the probe to hover over the surface as this could result in a false reading.
The first reading taken is displayed next to ‘1′, the second next to ‘2′ etc. When the third reading has been taken, the average (mean, xbar) of the three individual readings displayed is shown (X:).
The average (mean, xbar) reading is cleared when a fourth reading is taken.
By selecting ‘Send Individual Readings’ or ‘Send Mean (xbar) Reading’ via Menu/Bluetooth, the user can choose to transfer the individual readings or just the average (mean, xbar) reading values to ® ® ElcoMaster or ElcoMaster Mobile Apps – see Section 7 on page 7.

Non-ferrous probes use the eddy current principle to measure non-conductive coatings on non-ferrous metals such as aluminium. They are suitable for many paint, powder coating and industrial finishing applications.
Dual FNF Probes
Dual FNF probes combine ferrous and non-ferrous measurement capability. They are particularly useful when inspectors routinely work with different metal substrates and want the flexibility to measure coatings on both ferrous and non-ferrous surfaces with the same gauge system.

Model B, Model S and Model T
The current Elcometer 456 Separate range is available in Model B, Model S and Model T. Each level provides the same core measurement platform, with additional inspection, statistical, memory and data-management capabilities available as you move through the range.
Model B
Model B provides the essential functions required for fast and accurate coating thickness inspection. It is well suited to users who primarily require immediate on-screen measurements without extensive batch data storage.
Model S
Model S adds enhanced statistical, calibration, memory and data-management functions. USB and Bluetooth® connectivity allow inspection readings to be transferred for analysis and reporting.
Model T
Model T is the most advanced configuration and is designed for inspectors who require extensive data collection and analysis. It can store up to 150,000 readings in 2,500 batches and provides advanced inspection and reporting capabilities for larger projects.
ElcoMaster® Data Management
Compatible Elcometer 456 models can transfer coating thickness measurements to ElcoMaster® Data Management Software using USB or Bluetooth®. Readings can be organized, analysed and incorporated into professional inspection reports, helping reduce the time required to document coating inspection projects.
Bluetooth® connectivity also allows compatible mobile devices to receive inspection data for field reporting and analysis.
Designed for Demanding Field Use
The Elcometer 456 is designed for regular use in industrial and protective coating environments. Its rugged enclosure is impact resistant, dust resistant and water resistant to an equivalent of IP64.

What is the main advantage of the Elcometer 456 Separate over the Integral model?
The Separate model uses an external interchangeable probe. This allows the operator to select different probe shapes, measurement ranges and substrate types for different inspection jobs, making it more flexible for specialized applications and difficult-to-access surfaces.
Does the Elcometer 456 Separate include a probe?
No. The Separate gauge and measurement probe are selected separately. This allows the correct ferrous, non-ferrous or Dual FNF probe and measurement range to be chosen for the application.
Which probe should be used for coatings on steel?
A ferrous (F) probe is normally used to measure non-magnetic coatings such as paint, epoxy and powder coating over magnetic substrates such as steel or iron.
Which probe should be used for coatings on aluminium?
A non-ferrous (N) probe is used for non-conductive coatings on non-ferrous metal substrates such as aluminium. A Dual FNF probe is a practical alternative when both steel and non-ferrous metals are regularly inspected.
Can the Elcometer 456 measure very thick protective coatings?
Yes. The Separate system’s extensive probe range allows measurements up to 31 mm (1,220 mils) with an appropriate probe. The actual measurement range and accuracy depend on the probe selected.
Is the Separate model suitable for curved or difficult-to-reach surfaces?
Yes. This is one of its principal advantages. Specialized probe designs are available for curved surfaces, small components and restricted-access locations where an integral gauge may be less convenient.
Can inspection readings be transferred to a computer or mobile device?
Models with the appropriate data-output functions can transfer readings using USB or Bluetooth® for analysis and reporting with ElcoMaster® software and compatible devices.
Which Elcometer 456 model is best for extensive inspection projects?
Model T offers the most extensive data-management capabilities and can store up to 150,000 readings in 2,500 batches, making it particularly useful for projects requiring large amounts of documented inspection data.
QUICK TIP:
How to take a reading with Elcometer 456:
1. Whilst holding the gauge perpendicular, gently place the probe onto the surface.
· Do not drag the probe across the surface or bang the probe down hard onto the surface as this will damage the probe tip resulting in inaccurate readings.
· >1500µm’ (’>60mils’) indicates a reading over the probe range.
2. For subsequent readings, lift the probe off and then replace it onto the coated surface.
· Do not allow the probe to hover over the surface as this could result in a false reading.
The first reading taken is displayed next to ‘1′, the second next to ‘2′ etc. When the third reading has been taken, the average (mean, xbar) of the three individual readings displayed is shown (X:).
The average (mean, xbar) reading is cleared when a fourth reading is taken.
By selecting ‘Send Individual Readings’ or ‘Send Mean (xbar) Reading’ via Menu/Bluetooth, the user can choose to transfer the individual readings or just the average (mean, xbar) reading values to ® ® ElcoMaster or ElcoMaster Mobile Apps – see Section 7 on page 7.
