Measure Coating Bond Strength on Concrete Surfaces

The Elcometer 106/6 Coatings on Concrete Adhesion Tester is a fully portable, hand-operated pull-off tester specifically designed to measure the bond strength of coatings applied to concrete. It can also be used to assess the tensile strength of hardened concrete on site.

Unlike standard coating adhesion testers that typically use smaller dollies, the Elcometer 106/6 uses a large 50.8 mm (2″) diameter test dolly. The larger test area provides more reliable and repeatable measurements when working with concrete and other applications where pull-off adhesion values are comparatively low.

Direct Numerical Pull-Off Adhesion Measurement

The Elcometer 106/6 uses the established pull-off method. A test dolly is bonded to the prepared coating surface using adhesive. Once the adhesive has fully cured, the tester engages the dolly and an increasing tensile force is applied perpendicular to the surface.

When separation occurs, a dragging indicator retains the maximum value on the engraved scale, providing a direct numerical indication of the force required to separate the coating or concrete from the test surface.

The Elcometer 106/6 uses a 50.8 mm (2″) dolly rather than the 20 mm dollies commonly used with standard Elcometer 106 adhesion testers.

Understanding the Pull-Off Test

Pull-off testing can reveal more than a simple adhesion value. After the test, the dolly and test area should be examined to identify where the failure occurred. Depending on the coating system and substrate, the result may represent failure between the coating and concrete, failure between coating layers, cohesive failure within the coating, or failure within the concrete itself.

This distinction is important because a test in which the concrete fails before the coating interface indicates a different performance condition from one in which the coating separates cleanly from the substrate.

Testing Coatings Thicker Than 500 µm

Concrete coatings can have significant lateral bond strength, which may produce misleadingly high pull-off values. When the coating is more than 500 µm (20 mils) thick, the coating should be cut through to the substrate around the test area before the dolly is bonded, in accordance with the applicable test procedure.

Thinner coatings may also require cutting when specified by the client, contractor or applicable testing procedure. Whichever method is selected, it should be recorded and used consistently when comparing test results.
