• Measure objects as small as 25mm (1”)
• Distance-to-Target Ratio of 8:1

Measure Surface Temperature Instantly Without Contact

Using infrared technology and an integrated laser spot indicator, it allows operators to measure non-reflective surfaces safely without touching the target. The user can switch between °C and °F, while the clear LCD display simplifies readings in field and industrial environments.

The built-in laser spot indicator helps the user identify the measurement area while infrared sensing captures the energy emitted by the surface. Because no physical contact is required, the gauge is convenient for hot, moving, difficult-to-reach, or contamination-sensitive surfaces, provided the target material is suitable for infrared measurement.

The thermometer measures from -35°C to 365°C (-31°F to 689°F), covering a broad range of coating inspection, industrial finishing, maintenance, and process applications. Resolution is 0.2°C (0.5°F), with a stated accuracy of ±1.5°C (2.7°F).

surface temperature equipment for process monitoring.

The Elcometer 214L has an 8:1 distance-to-target ratio

This means the measurement spot is approximately one eighth of the working distance. For example, at a distance of 200 mm (8 in), the measured spot is approximately 25 mm (1 in) in diameter. Understanding this relationship helps ensure the target fully fills the instrument’s measurement area.

The Elcometer 214L uses a fixed emissivity setting of 0.95, which is appropriate for many non-reflective materials commonly encountered in industrial and coating inspection applications. Highly reflective or polished surfaces can produce unreliable infrared readings and may require a different measurement approach.

Used For Industrial Inspection

Elcometer lists the 214L for both protective coatings and industrial finishing applications. Its fast, non-contact measurement makes it particularly useful where surface temperature needs to be checked repeatedly during preparation, application, maintenance, or process monitoring.

As can be seen in the diagram, if the distance from the sensor optics to the target is 200mm (8″) for example, the diameter of the measured area is 25mm (1″).

Distance-to-Target Ratio The Elcometer 214 Infrared Digital Laser Thermometer has a distance-to-target ratio (D/T) of 8:1 and measures the emitted energy from a target spot one-eighth the size of the working distance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Elcometer 214L measure temperature without touching the surface?

Yes. It uses infrared technology to measure surface temperature without physical contact, while the integrated laser helps identify the target area.

What is the temperature range of the Elcometer 214L?

The measuring range is -35°C to 365°C (-31°F to 689°F).

What does the 8:1 distance-to-target ratio mean?

It means the diameter of the measured spot is approximately one eighth of the distance between the thermometer and the target. At 200 mm from the surface, for example, the measurement spot is approximately 25 mm in diameter.

Can it measure very small surfaces?

Yes. The Elcometer 214L can measure target areas as small as approximately 25 mm (1 in), provided the target completely fills the measurement spot.

Is the Elcometer 214L suitable for shiny metal surfaces?

It is designed primarily for non-reflective materials. Highly polished or reflective surfaces can produce inaccurate infrared readings because the instrument uses a fixed emissivity of 0.95.

How quickly does it provide a reading?

The digital temperature reading is produced in less than one second.

Does the thermometer use Celsius and Fahrenheit?

Yes. The user can switch between °C and °F directly on the instrument.
