From the biggest infrastructure projects to our daily consumer gadgets, most manufactured surfaces must be protected from rust. The smallest imperfection of this protective layer cause long term problems and drive up repair costs. Preventing this damage using Elcometer adhesion testers will protect your investment in the long term.
Quality tests of the coating clearly indicate existing and/or potential damage, help identify weak areas of bondage between surfaces and their coating, or between layers of coating, or the consistency of bonding properties of some surfaces. Testing coated surfaces often is important in order to schedule check-up and repair routines, thus preventing the costly coating damage and its consequences.
The coating process requires inspection at every stage to ensure compliance with the specification. From the preparation of the surface to be coated, through climatic condition monitoring to the dry film thickness evaluation, visual assessment and gauge-based testing are necessary.
For steel surface preparation, the removal of rust and other contamination and the creation of a surface profile is required to enhance the adhesion of the applied coatings. Elcometer offers a range of visual standards for rust removal and a simple test for dust on blast-cleaned surfaces. In order to determine the level of soluble salt contamination of the blast cleaned surface, a range of salt contamination methods are available including the Bresle Patch Method, the Saturated Filter Paper method, and the chloride-specific titration tube method.
How to measure dry film thickness using the Elcometer 456 Coating Thickness Gauge?
Since their first coating thickness gauge in 1947, Elcometer been world leaders in the design and manufacture of dry film thickness gauges and other inspection equipment for the coatings industry. The new Elcometer 456 is more powerful, rugged and easier to use than ever before. Housed in a heavy duty, impact resistant, dust and water proof case, the Elcometer 456 range can be used in the laboratory, the production line or in the harshest of environments. With its large, easy to read colour display, tactile, instant response keypad, and its simple menu structure, you can quickly navigate around all the features of this powerful, easy to use gauge allowing you to take accurate measurements in seconds.
The new Elcometer 456 is available with either a built in integral probe – ideal for flat surfaces or single hand inspection; or as a separate gauge, allowing you to choose the most appropriate probe for your particular application. A wide range of straight, right angled, miniature and telescopic probes are available for measuring coatings up to 30 millimetres or twelve hundred mils thick. Underwater, high temperature and armoured probes are also available. Separate gauges can be converted to an integral gauge using the PINIP plug in probe – providing you with the best of both worlds.
Elcometer 456 gauges have both USB and Bluetooth wireless data output which, when connected to your PC using ElcoMaster data management software, allows you to produce professional inspection reports in minutes. Each gauge is factory calibrated and ready to use out of the box. To get the best performance from your gauge, and make best use of the gauge’s 1% accuracy, adjust the calibration to suit your specific application using the gauges internal calibration routines. To take a reading, connect your probe, switch on the gauge and place the probe on the surface. Integral gauges switch themselves on automatically. Fast, accurate, repeatable and reproducible readings appear instantly on the colour display. With a reading rate in excess of 70 readings a minute the new Elcometer 456 is up to 40% faster than other gauges, allowing you to measure more or take less time for each inspection.
The Elcometer 456 is available in 3 versions, from the entry level Model B – when thickness measurement is all you need, to Model T which provides users with Alpha Numeric batch memory, warning limits identifying when a reading is outside specification, and predefined calibration methods to meet ISO, SSPC PA2 and other National and International Standards. The Elcometer 456 is supplied with everything you need to take accurate coating thickness measurements. Optional accessories such as screen protectors, probe placement jigs and certified calibration foils are also available.
