Map Thickness Variations in Very Thin Materials with Precision B-Scan and Grid Inspection
The Elcometer PTG8 Precision Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge combines the thin-material measurement capability of the PTG series with advanced visualization, data logging, grid batching, limits, and wireless data transfer. It measures materials as thin as 0.15mm (0.006in) from one side, making it particularly useful when conventional callipers or micrometers cannot reach both surfaces.
Three measurement modes—Interface Echo, Echo-Echo, and Plastic Mode—cover thin metals, plastics, and other suitable materials. The PTG8 adds B-Scan, Differential Mode, Scan Mode, statistics, grid-based measurement storage, and up to 100,000 stored readings, providing a more complete inspection platform than the PTG6.
Advantages of using Elcometer PTG8:
- Interface Echo (I-E) Echo-Echo (E-E) ) & Plastic Mode (PLAS) measurement modes
- Measurement range from 0.15mm (0.006″) to 25.40mm (1.00″)
- 2-Point, 1-Point, Material & Factory Calibration options
- Three user-programmable calibration memories
- User-selectable measurement rate; 4,8,16 readings per second
- User selectable reading resolution; 0.1mm (0.01″) or 0.01mm (0.001″)
- Scan Mode
- Readings, selected statistics, Bar Graph, Run Chart, B-Scan & Differential Mode
- Gauge memory; stores up to 100,000 readings in up to 1,000 sequential or grid batches
- User-definable upper and lower limits with audible & visual pass/fail warnings
- USB and Bluetooth® data output to ElcoMaster® and ElcoMaster® Mobile Apps

Measure Materials as Thin as 0.15mm
Echo-Echo Mode measures from 0.15–10.15mm (0.006–0.400in), while Plastic Mode covers 0.15–5.00mm (0.006–0.197in). Interface Echo extends the upper range to 25.40mm (1.000in). The stated measurement accuracy is ±1% or ±0.015mm (0.0006in), whichever is greater.
Visualize Thickness Changes with B-Scan
B-Scan creates a time-based, two-dimensional cross-sectional view of the material beneath the transducer. As the probe moves across the test surface, variations in thickness become visible graphically rather than appearing only as individual numerical readings. Automatic or user-defined zoom can be used to concentrate on areas of interest.
Compare Readings Directly with Nominal Thickness
Differential Mode allows a nominal thickness to be entered into the gauge. Each measurement can then be displayed together with its variation from that target, making it easier to identify areas that are thinner or thicker than expected without manually calculating the difference.

Scan at Up to 16 Readings per Second
Selectable measurement rates of 4, 8, or 16Hz allow the PTG8 to collect readings rapidly as the probe moves across a component. When the transducer is lifted from the surface after scanning, the gauge displays the average, lowest, and highest values measured during the scan.
Map Components with Grid Batching
Grid batches associate measurements with defined positions in a spreadsheet-style layout. This is useful when thickness needs to be documented systematically across a sheet, panel, moulding, fabricated component, or other larger surface rather than recorded simply as a sequence of unrelated measurements.
If a particular grid position cannot be measured, the PTG8’s obstruction function allows that location to be identified without disrupting the rest of the inspection grid.
Store Up to 100,000 Measurements
The PTG8 stores as many as 100,000 readings in up to 1,000 sequential or grid batches. Alphanumeric batch names, date and time stamps, batch review graphs, fixed batch sizes, batch linking, and measurement deletion functions provide considerably more structured inspection records than the PTG6.
Set Immediate Pass/Fail Limits
User-defined upper and lower thickness limits can be applied to individual readings or batches. Measurements outside the specified range trigger visual and audible warnings, allowing an operator to recognize an unacceptable thickness while still positioned at the inspection location.
Save Three Calibration Setups
Up to three calibration configurations can be stored and assigned alphanumeric names. This is useful when regularly switching between different materials or thickness ranges because an established calibration can be recalled instead of repeating the complete setup procedure.
Multiple Calibration Methods
The PTG8 supports 1-point and 2-point calibration, material selection from 39 presets, velocity calibration, and factory calibration. A calibration lock with optional PIN protection can help prevent unauthorized changes to established inspection settings.
Selectable High-Resolution Measurements
Measurements can be displayed at either standard or high resolution. Metric thickness readings can be shown to 0.1mm or 0.01mm, providing the additional numerical detail required for precision thin-material inspection.
Transfer Data by Bluetooth® or USB
Stored measurements can be transferred through USB or Bluetooth® to ElcoMaster® on compatible computers, Android devices, and iOS devices. This allows inspection data to move directly from the gauge into analysis and reporting workflows.
