Elcometer 107 Cross Hatch Cutter for Coating Adhesion Testing
Fast Assessment of Coating Adhesion
The Elcometer 107 Cross Hatch Cutter provides a simple and immediate method of assessing the quality of adhesion between a coating and its substrate. Designed for both field and laboratory testing, it creates a controlled lattice pattern through the coating so you can examine and classify the resulting coating removal.
Its rugged construction, large non-slip grip and interchangeable cutter system make the Elcometer 107 suitable for testing thin, thick and tough coatings on a wide range of surfaces. It can be configured for testing in accordance with ISO, ASTM and other recognized cross-hatch adhesion test methods.

Simple Cross Hatch Adhesion Test
The cutter is drawn across the coating to produce a series of parallel cuts. A second series is then made at approximately 90° to the first, creating the characteristic cross-hatch or lattice pattern.
After loose debris is removed, the test area is evaluated according to the applicable standard. Where required by the test method, specified adhesive tape is applied over the lattice and removed before the coating is examined and classified.
Quick-Change Four-Sided Cutter
The Elcometer 107 uses a quick-change four-sided cutter blade. Each blade provides four cutting edges, allowing a worn edge to be rotated or the cutter reversed before the blade requires replacement.
Different cutter spacings are available to suit the coating thickness, substrate and test standard. Available cutter configurations include 1 mm, 1.5 mm, 2 mm and 3 mm spacing.
Selecting the Correct Cutter
The correct cutter depends on the coating thickness, substrate type and test method. ASTM and ISO/JIS procedures do not always specify the same cutter for a given coating thickness, so the applicable standard should be confirmed before testing.

A wood floor finish cross-hatch test: prolong your hardwood floor varnish life expectancy
To prevent wood floor finish bubbles, chipping, or otherwise coming off for interior or exterior wood floor varnish, you need to test the adhesion of your varnish to the wood. It can be done on a sample of your wood surface before the project, or if you are sure about the results after the project is completed. While the varnish drying time may vary, the test itself takes seconds to perform!

Q&A
What does the Elcometer 107 actually measure?
The Elcometer 107 provides a classification of how well a coating remains bonded after a controlled lattice of cuts is made through it. It is an assessment of coating adhesion rather than a direct numerical pull-off strength measurement.
How do I know which cutter size to order?
The correct cutter is determined by the coating thickness, substrate type and test standard. For example, ASTM testing on a metal substrate uses an 11 × 1 mm cutter for coatings up to 50 µm and a 6 × 2 mm cutter for coatings from 50 to 125 µm. ISO/JIS requirements differ, so the applicable standard should be checked before selecting the kit.
Can one Elcometer 107 handle use different cutter sizes?
Yes. The cutter blades are interchangeable, and the available Elcometer 107 cutter sizes fit the same adhesion tester. This allows the instrument to be reconfigured for different coating thicknesses and test methods.
How long does a cutter blade last?
Each cutter has four cutting edges. When one edge becomes worn, the cutter can be rotated to use another edge. ISO/JIS guidance recommends replacing the cutting tool when the top of the blades has flattened to 0.1 mm.
What is the difference between the Basic and Full Kits?
The Basic Kit contains the handle, selected cutter, hexagonal wrench, classification chart, instructions and storage case. The Full Kit additionally provides a brush, 6× magnifier and the appropriate ASTM or ISO adhesive tape in an ABS carry case.
Is adhesive tape always required for a cross hatch test?
The procedure depends on the standard being followed. ASTM and ISO/JIS methods have specific requirements and procedural differences, so the test should always be performed according to the applicable standard rather than using a single procedure for every inspection.
